Strange But True

Kay could mend with both hands
For her it was easy as sin
She could sew with her left hand or her rightDepending on where she’d began

In that far off year of ’99 at Christmas
She called Santa Claus on the phone
She called him at his workshop
But finally reached him at his home

“Santa, dear Santa, oh please,
might I have 2 thimbles, that’s all”
Santa made a note of her wish
And politely thanked her for her call

And on Christmas morning so early
As the sun brightened Christmas Day
Kay read the note that Santa left
“Here is what you wanted, but I really have to know
Why 2 Kay?

2000

Orwell was a bit
ahead of himself
It will be the year 2000
not 1984
When the world is put on the
shelf.

Then over the nations
a silence will descent
As computers sign off
& users get the deep-knee
bends

I guess few programmers
Thought they’d live this long
As they programmed away
Humming their computer
songs.

So the ultimate year
for which most programs are
geared
Is the year 1999
‘Tis the year they all fear.

So, what will happen
On this New Year’s
Eve?
As we dine and dance
What do YOU believe?

Did Santa’s elves
Figure this out?
Did they leave miracles
When they were about?

Or on New Year’s Day
will the world be found
Adding & subtracting
With a nice quiet
sound?

Will the world ounce
more
be populated with those
who can still handwrite
a letter
And some purple
prose?

Will we return to the days
When we did sums in our heads
And our friends were alive
Face to Face
One on one
INSTEAD . . . .
of cyberspace midgets
and computer clones?
HURRAY! at last
maybe then we will get a
LIVE VOICE
on the phone.

What a Month

What a month
2000 January has been
Sopranos win awards
You betcha – They’re all men.

Grandmas stage a protest
See snow for the first time
Then hurry home to Cuba
For margaritas and a lime.

Winter landed with a vengeance
Where winters never went
So Alabama and her neighbors
Have frustrations they wish to vent.

Two fine teams, no one much were talking of
Made it to the Super Bowl
A lot of stressed spandex
As they fought for their goal.

This first month of the millenium
Now is at last over and done
Maybe we will get one fine day
Before groundhog has his fun.

Let The Water Run

Let the water run

Wrap up the hound

Put in the food

Add an extra pound

The millennium blew it

That was all for naught

Now—here is winter

We can use all that we bought

Get out those

Long underwear clothes

Button up your coat

Cover up your nose

I’ll be so glad

When spring again appears

When we can put away

All our heavy winter gear

What we do now?

Okay you tell me
What we do now?
We have gas generators and jugs and jugs of water
Too much dried food and dried milk (from a cow?)

There are flashlights
Everywhere I look
Manual can openers
And piles of survival books

I’ve put away batteries
Until I am rather ill
When next I need them
Who will find them? I know I never will

And extra cash?
We were told to keep some on hand
Well if I had some
Wouldn’t it be grand

Then now I could pay
The electric and water charge
In person – and on foot
With bills much too large

Ah—well—at last it is over
2000 came in like a lamb
no dire predictions came true
so the good guys got the last laugh, Sam

The Terrorist Tango

The terrorist tango
Left America exhausted
Messed up many a plan
Why some streets were deserted
The atmosphere stilled
Like ostriches with our heads in the sand
But, later, I guess
After I was asleep
Some party’s went right on ahead
And greeted the new year with verve and much nerve
While I dreamed away in my bed
I was told that times square
Had no room to spare
The same held true world wide
Where celebrations were planned
Cautions were canned
2000 blew in as ’99 died
